Also you can find here many schools and colleges for girls only and English schools etc. Children start attending formal education as soon they attain 5 years of age. As per the 2011 census, Srinagar bears the average literacy rate of 69.41% of which males and females are 76.25 % and 61.85 % literates respectively. The school education is primarily a responsibility of Government of Jammu & Kashmir and its nodal agencies in Srinagar.
Preparatory schooling is not compulsory but there are many kindergartens to prepare small children towards formal education. The city also has schools affiliated with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). For higher education / post-secondary education there are many colleges, universities and research centers both public funded and privately owned.
For the education of candidates who don’t want to go for higher study vocation training is available in varied disciplines including hospitality, cookery, computers, sewing, arts, knitting, designing, painting etc. Many of the vocational courses are supported by agencies of government and spans from 1 to 12 months.
Also there are many private education providers in vocational training streams approved by government to offer courses and award certificates.
